The SBO project "absCIGS" features research along two tracks: the CIGS-track and the OPV-track.

  • CIGS: Copper Indium Gallium Selenide
  • OPV: Organic PhotoVoltaic

The CIGS-track has two high-level research aims:

  • Developing a lab-scale non-vacuum baseline process for the formation of CIGS absorber layers leading to cells with conversion efficiency of 15%
  • Build up scientific understanding of the different steps in the process, from the formation of the CIGS precursors to the film transformation process

Challenges for this track are:

  • Creating a well-defined starting point: fully characterized nanoparticle colloids
  • Unravelling the magic: input-output relations in film transformation
  • Understanding what is happening: develop and implement models that describe nanoparticle film transformation

The OPV-track has the following objectives:

  • Incorporation of nanoparticles in the OPV bulk heterojunction to widen absorption window
  • Reviewed to include other approaches with higher prospectis of improving efficiency


  • Incorporation of nanoparticles in the organic matrix
  • Interaction between the molecular additives and the organic matrix
